Background

Manchester Airports Group is the UK's largest domestically-owned airport operator, with four airports - Manchester, East Midlands, Bournemouth and Humberside - serving almost 24 million passengers a year. Our airports aren't just popular, they're multi-award winning.

Manchester Airport has won prestigious industry recognition for customer service, and holds the title Best UK Airport, and one of their key objectives is to make carbon neutral by 2015.

Task

External and internal car parks are reliant on high quality well-lit spaces. Great lighting can help re-assure employees and members of the public of their safety, when using the car parking areas and walkways.

Manchester Airport (MAG), have made a major commitment to reducing their carbon emissions from 2009 and have set out to be the first airport group to reach its carbon neutral commitment by 2015. The Multi-Storey car parks in Terminal 2 and 3 were illuminated with 70 watt and 100 watt fittings which just managed to achieve the BS Standard of 50-75 Lux levels.

The car parks are lit 24 hours per day, 365 days per annum and so were a clear target for both energy reduction and improved light quality. MAG conducted a number of trials of various fittings and selected MHA Lighting as soon as their trial fitting was installed.

Solution

MHA Lighting designed a fitting to retrofit into the SON gear trays. The MHA Lighting fitting is a 30 watt unit and it delivers 90-134 Lux levels. Their airport were delighted that they had achieved all objectives, including improved levels and quality of lighting, energy reduction targets and providing the simplest installation solution. In addition they were pleased with the aesthetic appearance of the lights which complimented the modern image of the airport.

In total, MHA Lighting supplied 2000 lights to MAG's Terminals 2 and 3 car parks, which achieved an overall Co2 reduction by 3170 tonnes over the product life.

Perimeter Light

The new Car Park (CP) and Perimeter Light (PL) from MHA Lighting provides the highest quality, uniformly distributed light combined with substantial energy savings.

The CP and PL provides maintenance free applications for up to 60,000 hours; eradicating costly maintenance, especially at elevated heights.

Upon request CP & PL are available in a range of finishes and designs with optional Intelligent Control Systems and Emergency Fitting.

Car Park (30 Watt)

The Car Park 30 is suitable for a number of applications. The increased LEDs per fitting generate greater lux and therefore, making it ideal for use at elevated heights.
In door use multi-storey car parks 30W/40W versions, Road Tunnels, Subway, Train & Bus Stations, walk ways, external Car Parks.
